This is first part of my article :

Students will have to pay £6000 to £9000 for a degree course starting in 2012. Universities will be allowed to charge £6000 or £9000, depending on the extra support for students. Currently students pay £3.200. Students will be able to get a government funded loan to help them pay for course and living costs. They will have to pay it back when they start earning more than £21.000 a year. This has also increased from £15.000. This will affect students who can’t pay their fees upfront. The interest rate will increase by 3%. Students wanting to repay money early will have to pay 5% more.
The increasing costs of tuition fees will replace the public funding which was withdrawn from universities. It’s said that tuition fees must increase in order to maintain decent teaching standards and institutions.
Critics warned that the increase will hit those from middle – class families and make universities unpopular.

I've asked for feedback on this article. My friend said that it is very factual and suits the newspaper because my target audience is business people and older people, not teenagers. She also said that I could add opinions of the students and also from the government. Use quotes. This would make the article more formal and interesting.

This is a short explanation of my layout. Main story will be increasing university fees. I will create an article about it and place it in the four columns on my front cover. I will put student photos and quotes on the left side. I believe this is good because it is an important issue at the moment and I will use all of my cover for this.
I will take photo of money and put this as the main photo, representing increasing fees.
Further improvement of my newspaper cover. This is most suitable layout so far.

Thursday 25 November 2010

This is the latest improvement on my newspaper. I've added some colour at the top to make the headline stand out more. Now it's eye catching.  At the left side I will add some sub-headings and few sentences about the content of the newspaper, to make people interested in buying it.

Fonts.

There are two main types of font I could use.

Serif Fonts - these types of fonts are used a lot, it's simple and easy to read, it suits magazines, newspapers, almost everything.

Sans Serif Fonts - these fonts are usually used in newspapers, not magazines. The difference is that it has little 'tales' at the end. I believe that it would make my newspaper articles look nice and would suit the theme of the newspaper.

I was thinking of putting 'Latest news' in the right hand corner, at the top. I will ask for feedback because I think it is not enough, that corner still looks too plain.
I also changed font of the headline of the main story, in my opinion it looks better.
I also removed the outline of the photo and made it a little bigger.
This is my 2nd draft, layout. I've added date, website, headline of a main story, one photo and some columns for the body text. I still have to think of what to add at the corner in the top right. Main story will be raising university fees because I think it's important for all people, younger and older because not everyone starts university at 18 and not everyone has a lot of money to do that. This is not my photo, I took it from the internet and placed it there just for now, to see how my layout will look like with it. I will take a photo possibly using money, which will represent what the story is about. I might also add a small picture of a university as well. Because I don't want to put too much writing on the front page, but also not make it look like it only contains photos. I want to make this newspaper look interesting and formal.

Logos.

I have decided to use logo to make the newspaper stand out, because most newspapers  have logos and/or certain colours, so readers can recognize it.

I've looked at some newspaper colours and logos, and decided not to use colours, only black and white. I believe that this will make my newspaper look more formal. The logo will also be simple and not colourful.

Examples of logos that I made and chose from:

I like this one because it looks kind of like a globe. It's plain and simple.

I've tried to do a little bit different design inside. I believe that this one looks better.

This design is the first one I made up. The logo is too black, it's made up from different shapes, but because of lack of colour, it's impossible to see it.

Choosing masthead font.

I've played a little with fonts in word and tried to choose the best one for my headline.

1. Morning
Telegram - This masthead doesn’t stand out enough, readers won’t pick it up because it’s not eye- catching.

2. Morning
Telegram- This masthead is also not very interesting, there’s something missing. It’s not enough for a newspaper.

3. Morning
Telegram- This masthead is not clear enough, people won’t be able to read the masthead, too complicated.

4. Morning
Telegram- This masthead looks nice but is too thin, could be more bold, looks a bit boring.

5. Morning
Telegram - this font looks very good and eye – catching. This will be very good for headline.

Feedback on my first newspaper layout

This is my first draft of the masthead, logo and possible layout of the magazine cover. I want it to look formal and serious because the newspaper will be done in formal manner. I have shown this layout to other students and they've given feedback...

Positive points:
. The header/ masthead
. I like the design of the logo
. The newspaper looks like it would appeal to your target audience (male and female)
. I like the different sizes in the 'morning' and 'telegram'
. Your idea is quite original - no one else is doing this so it is a good idea
. Your layout is well worked out
. Title is relevant to target audience - formal
. Neat layout
. Very appropriate logo, looks like an international newspaper
. The logo works well with text
. It matches a conventions of a local newspaper
. Relevant to older audience. Looks very formal - just black and white
. The layout has been well thought out

Points for improvement:
. Looking at the templates there maybe a lot of spaces and gaps
. The theme of the newspaper may not appeal to 18 year olds
. Where are the dates and websites going to be put?
. Boxes should link right to the margins
. I agree that you should put your age range up
. Maybe add some slight colour
. You could make the title stand out more by giving in a shadow
. May not appeal to 18 - 25 year olds
. There's a lot of blank space on the masthead
. Put range up, 18 year olds would not like
. Could fill more space with mast head
. Small bit of colour

This is what students pointed out about my newspaper layout. By looking at these comments I now know that I will have to put the age range up because 18 - 40 is not the right age. as they say 18 year olds wouldn't be interested in this newspaper.
Next thing I should do is work out where I will put the dates, website and price. It is very important to make it stand out a little bit.
I will also try to play with the masthead and make it stand out a little bit more.
I will not change the logo because students agreed with me, and they liked it. I believe that it's unique and interesting. I have never seen anything like this before. So it's a good addition to my newspaper cover.

Newspaper covers.

I did some research on newspaper covers on the internet and found some interesting layouts, which will help me to produce mine. I believe that these 7 covers suit older people more than young. I will look for student newspaper covers and try to combine it together, to suit everyone.

Introduction.

I am going to produce a newspaper for working class people, university students, business people and generally for everyone who is interested in economy and wants to know what is happening. I will write about possibly increasing university fees as well. I believe the information I will include will be relevant to 18 - 40 year old audience.
This newspaper will be formal but I will try to make it interesting to younger people as well, because it will have information that will appeal to them.
I might include few short stories about people and their lives, this will give a sense of variety to the newspaper.

Research into mastheads and logos.

I did some research on existing and old newspaper mastheads and logos to help me produce interesting and eye catching newspaper.
